The Cell A Molecular Approach Fourth Edition

Courses in molecular and cellular biology are a cornerstone of undergraduate programs in the life sciences. The material is not only fundamental to all of biology, but also represents an exciting and rapidly moving area of science. This makes teaching undergraduates a rewarding experience, but also a challenging task. The Cell: A Molecular Approach meets this challenge by providing students with not only the most current information, but also with a conceptual framework and an introduction to the experimental nature of contemporary research. Designed for use in one-semester introductory cell biology courses, The Cell presents current comprehensive science in a readable and cohesive text that students can master in the course of one semester.
The new Fourth Edition of The Cell has been updated to reflect major advances since publication of the Third Edition in 2003, including:
* The role of microRNAs in regulation of gene expression
* Expanded discussions of genomics, proteomics, and signaling networks
* Translational regulation and the mTOR signaling pathway
* Roles of specialized lipid domains in cell surface processes
* Advances in stem cell biology
* Oncogenes and the rational design of new anticancer drugs
While retaining the overall organization, themes, and special features of earlier editions, including Key Experiment and Molecular Medicine essays, the Fourth Edition of The Cell includes:
* Three additional chapters, including Cell Death and Cell Renewal
* Major new sections, including
o Proteomics: Large-Scale Analysis of Cell Proteins
o Bioinformatics and Systems Biology
o Cell

2 Stars Lack of extended examples
This book left me wanting a lot more. A volume like this would shine if there were detailed and extended examples of campaigns that worked well, and not so well. Why did some succeed and others fail - that’s what we learn from. There are some short case studies, but nothing goes into detailed and extended metrics or enough ROI information.

5 Stars great book
This book not only describes the mechanisms that relate to immunology; it also describes some important experiments that were conducted in order to discover those mechanisms. The text is great for students who have a basic knowledge of immunology (from biochemistry and other classes), but have never learned the intricate details. B cell and T cell differentiation is covered in great detail with colorful figures and tables describing many concepts. Key concepts are also repeated throughout the book to ensure that the reader learns them.

Ion Channels of Excitable Membranes 3rd Edition

Ion channels underlie a broad range of the most basic biological processes, from excitation and signaling to secretion and absorption. Like enzymes, they are diverse and ubiquitous macromolecular catalysts with high substrate specificity and subject to strong regulation. This fully revised and expanded Third Edition of Ion Channels of Excitable Membranes describes the known channels and their physiological functions, then develops the conceptual background needed to understand their architecture and molecular mechanisms of operation. It includes new chapters on calcium signaling, structural biology, and molecular biology and genomics. Ion Channels of Excitable Membranes begins with the classical biophysical work of Hodgkin and Huxley, continues with the roles of channels in cellular signaling, then develops the physical and molecular principles needed for explaining permeation, gating, pharmacological modification, and molecular diversity, and ends with a discussion of channel evolution. Ion Channels of Excitable Membranes is written to be accessible and interesting to life scientists and physical scientists of all kinds. It introduces all the concepts that a graduate student should be aware of but is also effective in advanced undergraduate courses. It has long been the recognized authoritative overview of this field used by all neuroscientists.

1 Star for the brain child
I got this book for a class and never used actually used it. The book is really hard to understand and over the top. Be warned if you don’t have a strong background in biophysics and other sciences this book will make no sense.

Color Atlas of Anatomy A Photographic Study of the Human Body

Atlas includes dissections with precise representation of color and structure, schematic drawings in addition to high-quality color dissection photographs, and a didactic organization. New to this edition: new photographs and additional MRI and CT scans, tables and charts, and a section on learning boards to serve as a review tool. Previous edition: c1998.

5 Stars excellent
This atlas has real cadaver photos for all areas of the body. The fact that the pictures are real will help when studying for a practical exam in anatomy. The only negative aspect is there are around 50 pins per page which could be annoying when searching for a part you want to find.

4 Stars Don’t need the new edition
I am a medical student and I actually had the main author as my instructor - Victor Eroshenko.
The atlas is helpful, although the most helpful part is the CD. If you have histology lab as part of your course, the CD is helpful for giving tissue slides, labels, and descriptions. If you don’t have a lab as part of your course, I’m not sure if this text is necessary.
I had the opportunity to look at the 2007 and the 2005 editions, and there doesn’t seem to be much difference. Save yourself a lot of money and buy the tenth edition!
